The Philippines is known as the only predominantly Roman Catholic country in Southeast Asia. Of a population of 86,241,697 in 2004, 83% identified themselves as Catholics (UNESCO, 2004).Based on the 2003 Annual Statistical Report to Rome, there were 2,719,781 Catholics in Manila out of its estimated population of 2,993,000 (Legaspi, 2003).Since1595, when the ecclesiastical provinces of the Roman Catholic Church were established in the country, the hierarchy’s presence has been institutionalized.
