Ions must permeate voltage-sensitive ion channels to cross the membrane under the influence of an electric field. How do the ions interact with the field and the channel? How does a depolarization initiate ion conduction? What makes the current stop spontaneously? In this chapter we briefly review two mathematical approaches to transport through disordered matter, solitons in liquid crystals and percolation theory. We will relate this to ferroelectric liquid crystal behavior in voltage-sensitive ion channels. We will then proceed to the interactions of metal ions with large organic molecules and liquid crystals, and enquire into the interaction of permeant ions with the protein structure of the channel.
