Abstract
During process development in small-scale bioreactors, different materials used in the bioreactors were found to have a negative effect on cell growth and viability of HEK293 cells grown in protein-free medium. A variety of materials were tested including: stainless steel 316, Duran glass, ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM), silicone, C-flex, Viton, and low density polyethylene (LDPE). The most detrimental effect on cell growth and viability was seen with EPDM. Compared to the polystyrene control stainless steel and glass decreased cell growth while Viton, LDPE, and silicone showed the highest biocompatibility.
