BRIDGES IN VIBRATED GRANULAR MEDIA

We study a particular consequence of the dynamics of vibrated granular media, which is the spontaneous formation of stable bridges. Here we examine their geometrical characteristics, and compare the results of a simple theory with those of independent simulations of three-dimensional hard spheres. Our conclusion is that bridges are the signatures of spatiotemporal inhomogeneities, the carriers of the so-called ‘force chains’.
