Abstract

Chapter 9 focuses on the importance of reconceptualizing the assistant principalship and leadership transitions at the theoretical and practical levels. It proposes that understanding the personal, professional, and organizational aspects of administrative passages and transitions can address some of the existing leadership gaps and improve recruitment, selection, induction, and retention practices for this critical leadership position. This chapter provides recommendations for improving the assistant principals’ role and for creating coordinated and sustainable structures that scaffold the leadership development needs of newcomers and support the creation of equitable communities of practice.
