Immersion–Emmersion: Ascending the Administrative Hierarchy

Chapter 6 explores the second epicycle of Immersion–Emersion where assistant principals come face to face with external school and district socialization demands. This period of shocks, surprises, and “absurd contrasts” is exacerbated by the ill-defined nature of the role of the assistant principal. This chapter describes the paradoxes and aporias that emanate from the assistant principals’ social and psychological “middle space” location within the organizational hierarchy and their efforts to make sense of these early tensions and ambiguities.
