Abstract

This chapter situates the topic of administrative passages within the research and practice of educational administration, and it provides a general overview of issues related to assistant principals, their career transitions, and the frameworks and questions that motivate and guide this work. It discusses the paradoxical nature of assistant principals’ transitions and their impact on newcomers, their school communities, and the administrative profession. This chapter also highlights the importance of developing a perspective which honors assistant principals’ narratives, and allows for a simultaneous analysis of the internal and external dynamics of change and transition process.
