Abstract
The article describes the main reasons for and mechanisms behind recent sabkhat formation in the Aral Sea region, especially in the deltas of the Amu-Darya and the Syr-Darya rivers. Desertification in the region is leading to the destruction and rebuilding of ecosystems. Salinization is one of the main trends of the soil cover and vegetation changes. The patterns of these changes are suggested to describe and predict desertification trends in general.
