The interest, among second language acquisition researchers, in the beliefs that learners, teachers, and the general public hold regarding language learning seems to be prompted by the assumption that remain usually implicit but can be made explicit through surveys, questionnaires and the like (for a critical review of such assumptions see Barcelos, Chapter 1, this volume).
