Before considering the details of measuring the resistivity of earth formations, let us look at the usefulness of such a measurement. The desired petrophysical parameter from resistivity measurements is the water saturation Sw. In the previous chapter, the resistivity of various materials, including brines, was discussed. There the focus was on the resistivity of a porous rock sample filled with a conductive brine in order to relate this measurable parameter to formation properties of interest for hydrocarbon evaluation.
