Abstract
In this concluding chapter I return to the central questions of this book. How and in what ways can ‘the academic’ be re-turned to women? Indeed, can it be re-turned at all, and who is to do the turning? And what part does (or could) the academy play in recognising and developing the lifelong learning experiences of women as well as men? I end the book by considering the future of higher education, highlighting key recommendations for policy makers and practitioners. In doing so, I aim to initiate and stimulate debate on the meanings and purposes of higher education, and on the development of lifelong learning for women in the academy.
