Before I first began teaching at Harvard, I had of course known of several eminent members of the faculty, and when I came to Cambridge I resolved to meet them or at least audit their lectures. Among these, I had read and particularly admired Professor Gordon W. Allport, author of Personality: A Psychological Interpretation,1 and Professor Robert H. Pfeiffer, author of Introduction to the Old Testament.
