Multiferroic Ordering of Hexagonal Manganites

  • Conference paper

Part of the book series: NATO Science Series ((NAII,volume 164))

Abstract

The hexagonal manganites RMnO3 (R = Sc, In, Y, Ho — Lu) show coexisting ferroelectric (FEL) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering at low temperatures. They therefore belong to a group of materials called multiferroics for which new physical phenomena are predicted, based on the coexisting forms of ordering. In the case of the hexagonal manganites one could show for the first time the existence of a multiferroic contribution to optical second harmonic generation (SHG) which is proportional to the bilinear product of FEL and AFM order parameters.
