Historical foundations of applied geography

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: GeoJournal Library ((GEJL,volume 77))

Abstract

The multiple aspects of applied geography are as old as geography itself, which was for long considered as a scholastic and academic discipline, “revealing Humanity to itself” to quote Max Sorre. From the very beginning, geographical sciences have permitted an enlargement of the known world: an accurate ordnance survey of the already acquired knowledge makes new explorations easier and leads to rub out the white spots from the world map.
