A Phased Array System for the Acquisition of Ultrasonic RF-Data up to 20 MHZ

Abstract

During the last few years a digital phased array system has been developed that is used as a hardware-research-interface for the acquisition and processing of ultrasonic RFdata. The system contains a digital beam former with 64 transmit-receive-channels (expandable up to 128). Phased Array as well as Linear Array Probes are supported. The RF-data is transmitted to a standard PC using a PCI-IO-card (40 MHz/ 16bit) for signal and image processing. The RF data can be stored on hard disk for documentation and offline processing [1]. The settings of the beam former (focusing, steering, waveform, multibeam) can be programmed freely. Using a computer aided simulator the resulting beam pattern can be computed and visualized before loading the settings into the phased array system. The system is used in different applications, e. g. as a data acquisition device for new clinical applications. It is also used as a development platform for new multi-elementprobes and additional hardware based signal processing. Results from the use of the system during the acoustical characterization of a 20 MHz multi-element acoustic block are presented. Using the beam pattern simulator optimal settings for the system were computed. The simulated and measured patterns are compared to show the influence of the quantization by the system to the resulting beam.
