Abstract
The paper concerns designing and animation of periodic patterns. First, the characterization of rosettes, borders and periodic planar designs is given. Then, an animated generative system DARTAN, which produces a great variety of periodic designs, is proposed. The role of perceptual actions and animation in supporting perception of emergent shapes in generated patterns is also described.
