Abstract
Peritoneal dialysis (PD) has now become an established form of renal replacement therapy. Its use throughout the world is increasing, and it has provided a means of managing some patients who would have otherwise been denied treatment because hemodialysis was inappropriate, had failed or was unavailable. The current state of the art has been a combination of painstaking efforts, dedication and ingenuity on the part of several innovative pioneers in this field over the past two centuries. This chapter describes the historical development of the techniques and technology of PD and goes on to describe the current dialysis therapies that are available, as well as the future of PD technology.
