Death of the Ether
Maxwell’s amazing revelation of light’s electromagnetic nature prepared the ground for many of the twentieth century’s most fundamental scientific discoveries. But despite his insight, Maxwell made one wildly inaccurate assumption about light. Towards the end of the 1800s, quite unintentionally, the American Albert Michelson would discover the truth. Before then, the nineteenth century flair for invention would have brought many new discoveries to the world of light.
