Abstract

One after another, the twentieth century iconoclasts ripped apart the carefully constructed classical picture of light. First to go was the ether. Then Young’s thoroughbred light wave was replaced by a mongrel, neither wave nor particle, but somehow both simultaneously. And QED made it unnecessary for light to be a wave at all. As Feynman’s theories changed our understanding of light’s life cycle, light technology was beginning to change our lives.
