One after another, the twentieth century iconoclasts ripped apart the carefully constructed classical picture of light. First to go was the ether. Then Young’s thoroughbred light wave was replaced by a mongrel, neither wave nor particle, but somehow both simultaneously. And QED made it unnecessary for light to be a wave at all. As Feynman’s theories changed our understanding of light’s life cycle, light technology was beginning to change our lives.
