Abstract
In the contemporary field of media and communication studies, the student is often introduced to an array of concepts or communication models utilized to study the mass media and popular culture (cf. Fiske 1982). These models are diverse, ranging from ‘simple’ communication models (Shannon and Weaver 1949; Gerbner 1956) to more semiotic and discursively derived approaches (cf. Hall 1997). These broad approaches to the communication process can be differentiated in relation to the status they accord language.
