Abstract

It has already been noted that flow data may be used to classify network facilities on a functional basis. There is in addition a case for studying the pattern of flow itself. Traditionally such analysis has adopted a cartographic method with the main patterns being identified and portrayed in map form,1 but this method has proved unsatisfactory where flows are very complex, or where very large amounts of data have to be analysed. This has led to the adoption of new techniques for analysis, and to the disaggregation of flow data in order to explain smaller component parts of the whole.
