Abstract
Even a cursory examination of transport systems reveals that they differ greatly in the proportion of traffic allocated to competing modes. Indeed the proportions vary so widely that it is impossible to make any general description of the patterns which result. Studies of the problem have therefore concentrated upon two or three themes: the identification of factors determining the intermodal split, the ranking of these factors in order of importance, and the construction of theories, formalised as working models, which both accurately reflect the decision making process and produce aggregate patterns consistent with reality.
