Facilities for Data Transmission

  • Chapter
Planning for Data Communications

Abstract

To apppreciate the position of the telecommunications authorities† it is useful first to consider what proportion of revenue the data communications part does represent. Typically today it accounts for less than 5 per cent of the total revenue stemming from telephony, telegraphy and data transmission. Although data traffic is currently growing much faster than voice traffic, the latter will still dominate revenues for a long time to come. This factor therefore heavily influences the investment policy of the telecommunications authorities with regard to the development of data transmission facilities.
