Catabolism and Energy Production

  • Chapter
Biochemistry of Parasitic Helminths

Abstract

The main function of catabolic pathways is the production of energy. This energy, usually in the form of ATP, is required for mechanical, synthetic or osmotic work, and, in some systems, energy can also be dissipated as light or heat. As well as energy production, catabolic pathways have three other important functions; they generate reducing power for synthetic reactions, they produce intermediates for synthetic reactions and, finally, they provide a mechanism for the degradation of macromolecules as part of the constant turnover of cellular constituents.
