Abstract

In the context of rapid social and technological change, which has been characteristic of Western industrialised nations since the Second World War, it has become imperative for governments to refine procedures for the collection, analysis and evaluation of detailed up-to-date information about the socio-economic phenomena associated with population growth and variations in its distribution and structure. These data provide the basis for monitoring and understanding contemporary trends, for making forecasts about future developments and for formulating effective policies to meet the needs predicted, whether they be for education, professional training, housing, medical care or other social welfare services and communal facilities.
