Abstract

As mentioned in Chapter 4, endocrine glands have lost their connections (or ducts) to the outer surface of the body and discharge their products directly into the bloodstream. They are thus also termed ductless glands and their secretions are called hormones. Hormones are chemical messengers in the body and affect many aspects of cellular physiology and behaviour.
