Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors in the treatment of hypertension

  • Chapter
IUPHAR 9th International Congress of Pharmacology

Abstract

Inhibiting endogenous vasoconstrictor mechanisms or enhancing endogenous vasodilator substances is an alternative, more physiological approach to lowering high blood pressure. The renin angiotensin system is the most powerful and important hormonal system in the control of blood pressure and in the pathogenesis of hypertension. Investigators for many years have researched for methods of blocking this system. The advent of potent, orally active angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors has now made this approach a practical clinical reality.
