Abstract
The basic principle underlying the electrical test methods is that electrical eddy currents and/or magnetic effects are induced within the material or component under test and, from an assessment of the effects, deductions can be made about the nature and condition of the testpiece. These techniques are highly versatile and, with the appropriate equipment and test method, can be used to detect surface and sub-surface defects within components, determine the thickness of surface coatings, provide information about structural features, such as crystal grain size and heat treatment condition, and also to measure physical properties including electrical conductivity, magnetic permeability and physical hardness.
