Components Subjected to Bending and Direct Stress: Unsymmetrical Bending
The Causes of Combined Bending and Direct Stress. When a cross section of a component is subjected to bending of the kind dealt with in Chapter VII, and in addition is called upon to transmit compressive or tensile axial forces, then the section is said to be subjected to combined bending and direct stress. This state of stress can arise from the action of separate transverse and axial loads, from loads acting obliquely and having transverse and axial components, or from loads acting longitudinally and having lines of action which pass outside the centroid of area of the cross section. Components subjected to one or other of these forms of loading include tie rods and short struts, forked and cranked members and press frames.
