Springs: Function and Application

  • Chapter
Mechanical Engineering Design

Abstract

The design of springs generally falls outside the scope of this book, since they may be classed as special components requiring the skill and experience of the spring manufacturer. Some knowledge of their function and applications, however, is essential if the designer is to make a preliminary assessment of the kind of spring he is likely to require, and to enable the design of adjacent parts to be continued while awaiting information from the spring manufacturer. Moreover, if the springs are not to perform exacting duties and are required urgently, the designer may wish to provide a complete specification, and either have the manufacturers work to this without entering into further consultation or place the order with his own works.
