Characteristics of Modern Materials

  • Chapter
Mechanical Engineering Design

Abstract

For intelligent and resourceful design, the designer clearly must know the materials which are available, and the properties they possess. Choice of materials depends on many factors such as the intensities and types of stresses to which the component is to be subjected, whether it is to be flexible or rigid or is to experience high temperatures or corrosive actions, and how it lends itself to processes of manufacture; forging, casting, machining etc.
