Abstract

Here is one of those books that give one all the more pleasure because they recall an earlier, more agreeable age, adding something fresh to our knowledge of it, bringing out new letters from houses that have meant much in the past. In this case Woburn, with its immense and varied inheritance, now in part dispersed — though nothing can or need disperse historic memories. The editor places these letters perfectly in their setting, tells us all that we want to know to make the story clear, works them skilfully into a characteristic conversation piece of the eighteenth century.
