Abstract
It is an essential and inevitable part of the structure of monarchy that provision be made for the maintenance of the royal authority and of the machinery of government in the event of the minority or the incapacity, permanent or temporary, of the sovereign, or of his absence from the country. The post-Conquest history of Britain is rich in varied examples of these precautions.
