Abstract

The remaining years of Sir Nicholas’s life were dominated by the question of Mary Stuart and the problems she gave rise to, for herself and everyone connected with her:

The daughter of debate, that eke doth discord raise

— as Elizabeth wrote of her in her antique manner of versifying. As the result of his embassy in France he was well known to Mary, and we find presents and tokens being exchanged among members of this small exalted circle. In the summer of 1563 Lady Throckmorton sent a ring and a token by Captain Tremayne to Marie de Béthune, one of the four Maries, with her love and commendations to the Queen of Scots. Marie promised to send her a ring ‘quhilk I vais accustumat to veir dayle’, with remembrances to Sir Nicholas.1
