Abstract
The circumstances of Ralegh’s return to Court show who had been responsible for keeping him away. During the years of his absence Essex reigned as sole favourite in his sovereign’s heart, and he was not going to share that position with anyone. Not until he was squared could Ralegh come back, and when he did it was not on the old footing.
