Abstract
The form a + ib (or a + jb) is obtained for example if the standard method of solution of a quadratic equation is applied to equations such as x 2 - 2x + 3 = 0. The solutions x = 1 ½ √(-2) are defined to be numbers and for convenience are written 1 ½ i√2 (or 1 - j√2 where i (or j) is used in place of √(-1).
