Abstract

Our primary object here is to establish equations to describe the stresses in a body. We consider, in particular, rigid bars and perfectly flexible strings (cables, etc.) subjected to various loads. We examine only two dimensional situations, proceeding in each case by considering the equilibrium of elements of the body. In Chapter 15 the deflection of imperfectly flexible beams is covered.
