Some Quantitative Studies of Mitochondrial-Cytoplasmic Compartmentation and Transport

  • Chapter
Metabolic Compartmentation in the Brain

Abstract

Cytoplasmic-mitochondrial compartmentation has been studied extensively in many tissues. Such study has necessarily been much less thorough in the brain, both because of the extreme diversity of cell types and because procedures for obtaining good brain mitochondrial preparations (for example, Clark and Nicklas 1970) have only recently been developed. This brief review accordingly summarizes some corresponding studies in other tissues and attempts to extrapolate them to the brain.
