Summary

Measurements of noise levels of 506 machine tools of 17 different types have been made by ICPMUA, Bucharest using the procedure laid down in BS 4813: 1972 and STAS 8857–82. The measurements were made in Roumania under workshop conditions, mainly with the machines running light at top speed. The results have been analysed by MTIRA using statistical methods developed for this purpose. Large differences in noise level are found between similar machines but approximate relations have been obtained for the more common types of machine tool between noise level and maximum spindle speed and between noise level and rated power. In addition, the relation between noise level and spindle speed has been investigated on nine machine tools.
