Automatic Optimisation of Dynamic Dampers for Machine Tool Structures

In the first part of the paper, the prevailing techniques for designing auxiliary dampers for machine tools or other mechanical structures are briefly discussed, together with their limitations. A generalised method is then developed where all approximations of the previous methods are eliminated.

Further, appropriate optimisation techniques are developed and used in a computer program DYNDEM for optimising auxiliary damping systems in machine tool structures. By these techniques the computer is actively involved in determining the parameter adjustments during the iteration process. The same techniques can, with some adaptation, be used in other design problems.

Finally, several practical applications of the program to existing machine tools illustrate its practical usefulness and versatility.
