Summary

Recent legislation extends obligations concerning the safety of machine tools, as articles for use at work, to designers, manufacturers, suppliers and importers. The duties refer to safe design and construction, testing and examination, supply of information concerning safety, research for discovering and eliminating risks, and safe installation. The paper considers the role of the designer in discovering and eliminating hazards, and suggests the introduction of a formal analysis for risk elimination. ‘Designing out’ hazards is briefly discussed and a number of observations on principles of guarding conclude the paper.
