Layout Design and Simulation of Group Cells
With increasing interest in group technology and the cell system of production, the problem of determining the optimum layout of machines within cells demands attention.
When it is desired to arrange the machines in a flow line, the problem arises of determining the sequence in which the machines should be laid out so as to ease material handling and work flow. Due to variations in the number of operations on the parts and in their operation sequences, a sequence of machines to satisfy any one part is unlikely to satisfy all of them. This problem is referred to as the mutli-product line layout problem.
The paper reviews the single-machine case, when only one machine of each type exists in the line. It then discusses the general case, when as many machines of each type may be introduced as can be economically justified, and develops a method of solution using a computer. These procedures prepare various alternative line designs, which are then evaluated by computer simulation.
An illustrative case study is discussed.
