Abstract
Until the recent reorganisation of local government, when two largely industrial sectors in the north part of Cheshire were merged with newly-created metropolitan counties, Cheshire’s boundaries had remained unchanged for about 900 years when it was established as a Norman ‘County Palatinate’. In 1974 part of the Wirral was incorporated into Merseyside and the north-east corner of Cheshire became part of Greater Manchester.
