Summary

The cutting rate of a standard spark machine has been increased by an order of magnitude by using a paraffin dielectric under a modest static pressure, 550 k N/m2 (80 psi), while keeping the flushing rate constant. Such increases are not found with all combinations of pulse duration and polarity, and are largely confined to the roughing region. Experimental results obtained with a Sparcatcon machine are given. The advantages and disadvantages, e.g. increased wear ratio, of the use of pressure are discussed. An explanation of the phenomenon is suggested.
