Summary
A computer is used to study the variation in behaviour of a horizontal milling machine as its geometry is varied. Computations have been made of the stiffness, modes of vibration and resistance to chatter. Geometrical variations include table position, knee height, overarm and arbor positions, the position of the cutter as well as the diameter of the arbor. The results show that some geometrical variations cause very large variations in behaviour.
