The Production of Spiral Bevel Gears by Computer Aided Manufacturing Techniques
Very little research has been carried out in the area of applying computer aided manufacturing techniques to the manufacture of gears. The main problems in the production of gears of this type is to adequately describe the space curves necessary to describe the cutting action. In addition to apply this knowledge to obtain the desired relative motions of the machine tool axes and cutter rotation.
This paper describes a computerised approach to the calculation of the cutter paths to generate spiral bevel gears and its implementation into a C.N.C. system. In addition the program calculates the necessary dimensions for setting the tool and blank.
With the information supplied by the output of the program, it is possible to set up a numerically controlled machine tool in approximately ten minutes, for cutting of spiral bevel gears.
This research results in the ability to cut gears on numerically controlled machine tools in a batch production mode.
