Summary
A simplified method of producing smooth edged blanks in conventional presses is outlined. The method allows existing tool manufacturing techniques to readily accommodate the tooling requirements. It is the subject of patent specification no. 1367639.
The process is concerned primarily with the imposition of a stress system resulting from tooling characteristics in blanking and piercing, which allows metal flow to take place in the work-hardened region produced by conventional methods.
The influence of the tooling geometry is discussed and associated force requirements presented.
A review of the effects on component characteristics is made and a specific industrial application is discussed.
In general it is suggested that the process offers the advantages attributed to
other smooth edge blanking and piercing methods. Tool making costs, tool maintenance
costs and press capacity requirements are no more demanding than those associated with conventional piercing and blanking.
