Abstract
The UK has yet to decide if it is going to proceed to the construction of a programme of commercial fast breeder reactors. The decision may well be taken in the lifetime of the present Government. Whichever way it goes, it will have a major impact not only domestically but internationally. Relations with the USA and with the EEC are deeply involved with nuclear strategy. The nuclear fuel cycle is a world-wide industry, with fuel supplies located in only a few countries, while enrichment and reprocessing facilities are even more restricted in their availability. Domestically, a decision to proceed will mean commanding more resources than for any other technology. The political and social implications may be even greater. A decision not to proceed will also have its impact because it may mean the gradual dismantling of the nuclear industry with its many agencies and suppliers. Constructively, it will call for a radical reassessment of our energy future and more research on renewable energy sources.
