Surgery is used in pressure sores when prevention and medical measures have failed. An important distinction to be made is between the types of pressure sores—those with a non-neurological background (e.g. pneumonia, fractured femur or other prolonged illness) and a neurological type, either disease or traumatic paraplegia. The techniques used are standard in plastic surgery and consist of free skin grafting and the application of skin flaps of various types.
