Abstract

The kidneys share with the lungs responsibility for acid-base homeostasis, and the effects of primary disturbances in the function of one system are often compensated by the other. In addition, renal disease may affect respiratory function via its complications such as fluid retention and anaemia. After taking account of these effects, there remain in many patients abnormalities of the CO Diffusing Capacity — usually a reduction but occasionally, in the specific case of Goodpasture’s syndrome, an increase.
